Privacy policy
Splay is built to need as little of your data as possible. In short: no account, no analytics, no recording.
Last updated 16 October 2026. Splay is made by Henry Petch, who is the person responsible for the information described here. You can reach me through the Splay issue tracker on GitHub.
The app
- Your audio passes through your Mac's memory on its way to the output you chose, including an AirPlay speaker on your local network. It is never written to disk and never sent anywhere else.
- No account, no analytics, no telemetry. Splay doesn't collect usage data and has no way to identify you.
- Your settings, such as which app is pinned to which output, are saved on your Mac only.
- Track names. If you allow it, Splay asks Spotify or Music which track is playing so it can show it next to the output. This stays on your Mac.
Permissions macOS will ask for
- Audio capture, to redirect the sound of the apps you choose.
- Local network, to find and talk to the AirPlay speaker you choose.
- Automation, to read the current track from Spotify or Music.
The browser extension
The optional Chrome extension lists the tabs that are playing sound and sends a tab's audio when you ask. It talks only to the Splay app on the same Mac, over a connection that never leaves your computer (127.0.0.1). It shares tab titles, icons and the audio of tabs you send, and nothing goes to me or any server. It asks for broad permissions (tab capture and access to all sites) because Chrome requires them to capture a tab's audio and to see which tabs are playing.
Updates and downloads
Splay checks for updates by asking splay.peche.world, which forwards the request to GitHub. Downloads come from GitHub. Vercel (which hosts the website) and GitHub may log your IP address and standard request details under their own policies. I don't collect or store that information myself.
This website
The website has no cookies and no analytics. It loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so Google receives your IP address when a page loads.
Feedback
If you send feedback through GitHub issues, it is public on GitHub and handled under GitHub's policies. Please don't include anything private.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. For anything you want to ask or correct, open an issue at the link above.
